Velvet Elvis at the top of the list?
It’s always hard to pick the “best” when the group includes so many really, really good candidates. But if I were forced to, right now in my spiritual walk, I’d give the nod to Rob Bell and Velvet Elvis. The theology is sound. The historical background information includes things I never knew before. With references for those of us who like to go even deeper. But the main reason I like the book is its basic premise: God didn’t stop talking to us 2000 years ago. Christianity that doesn’t evolve, question, and get discussed is a dead Christianity, of little value to anyone. Test it. Probe it. Wrestle with it. Jesus deserves nothing less.

I lean more toward Donald Miller. Blue Like Jazz and Searching for God Knows What are two of the best books I’ve ever read about Christianity.
