Friday, March 14th, 2008

There is nothing more compelling than a person who has been transformed by Christ. And there is no better book about the process than this one:

Books mentioned in the January Newsletter

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

I referenced Dutch Sheets in the January newsletter in talking about prayer bowls, but didn’t give specifics. Two books I recommend are

Intercessory Prayer
By Dutch Sheets

and

Beginner’s Guide to Intercession
By Dutch Sheets

And in case you missed the newsletter or you’d like to subscribe, Focus on Prayer Newsletter.

The 11 Day Path–Overcoming Stumbling Blocks to Belief

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Too many people get bogged down in the wilderness of unanswered questions about God, Jesus, Christianity and the Bible. These stumbling blocks delay or derail the spiritual journey. The 11 Day Path provides answers to 9 key questions and it offers practical advice for your spiritual journey. Startling, thought-provoking–you probably won’t hear these answers in a sermon on Sunday. Pre-publication copies are available for a free download or the paperback version can be purchased. The feedback about The 11 Day Path has been very positive, with suggestions that it would be great for discipleship programs as well as evangelism and outreach.

“The Great Divorce”

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

C.S. Lewis is one of my favorite authors. I enjoyed his popular, “Mere Christianity,” but few people I know have read, “The Great Divorce,” also by C.S. Lewis. This book is not about divorce in its traditional sense as one would think. As it happens, a fellow boards a bus getting a partial glimmer of what heaven with God may be like and gets a chance to ask some of those hard questions we all want to ask, why might God allow some horrible things to happen. I read this book at a very difficult period during my life and experienced overwhelming joy and relief. As Christian books go only the Bible itself has moved me more. Thought this might be a good place to pass it on and to see if anyone else out there has read “The Great Divorce.”

Velvet Elvis at the top of the list?

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

It’s always hard to pick the “best” when the group includes so many really, really good candidates. But if I were forced to, right now in my spiritual walk, I’d give the nod to Rob Bell and Velvet Elvis. The theology is sound. The historical background information includes things I never knew before. With references for those of us who like to go even deeper. But the main reason I like the book is its basic premise: God didn’t stop talking to us 2000 years ago. Christianity that doesn’t evolve, question, and get discussed is a dead Christianity, of little value to anyone. Test it. Probe it. Wrestle with it. Jesus deserves nothing less.
